The authentic toga of Rome, dating from about the seventh or sixth century B.C., was never a rectangle. Its original shape was that of a semi-circle, measuring between fifteen and eighteen feet long along its straight side, and from five to six feet wide at the middle.
The toga was draped on the body by placing one end at the left foot, with the straight edge taken over the left shoulder and arm, passed across the back, hung lloose under the right arm, across the chest, over the left shoulder and arm again, with the remaining end hanging down the back.
Having arranged the toga as described, it will be found that the straight edge under the right arm can be made, by turning it over, to form a second piece of curved drapery over the right upper leg. This is called the ';sinus';. Also, if the straight edge of the first portion that passes over the left shoulder is pulled out, and pouched over the top part which also crosses the left shoulder, the draped effect is obtained. This part, called the ';umbo';, was often used to envelop the right hand. The loose portion at the back of the right shoulder was often drawn up over the shoulder and attached to the belt at the waist, so as to form a sort of sleeve that could also be used as a hood of sorts during bad weather.
The toga was also generally worn over a square, sleeveless tunic called a colobium that fell to mid-thigh. In earlier years the toga had been worn by itself, but a small garment called a ';subligaculum'; was worn bound round the hips as a loincloth. It was superseded by the tunica, or colobium soon after Roman society was established on the Palantine Hill. How to make a toga out of a bed sheet??
oh man i have been in a toga twice , its easy , kig size sheet works best, cause you have more folding room.get your sheet and fold it in half, wrap it arround you once, and then again but halfway in the back bring it up to your shoulder and drape it pin it to the chest area, if you are a male wrap it once and then bring it over your sholder and pin it at the waste, go to a fabric store and by gold rope to go arround your waste , trust me it makes it look alot better than a plain sheetHow to make a toga out of a bed sheet??
A real ';toga'; cant be because the sheet is too wide and not long enough.
However, a reasonable proxy can be made with a sheet if you use clips/safety pins.
Put it behind you - put one end over each shoulder. Pull one end so that the left side is shorter than the right. Keep that end pulled down over the front (and to the side) of the body.
Take the other end and swing it over your shoulder. I usually pinned it in the area under the left armpit.
Good luck
