The higher the thread count, the softer the sheets. Also, Egyptian or brushed cotton sheets are made of very soft fibers. Try to find at least 500 thread count sheets to begin with. Check the prices and go up in thread count from there. Washing these high thread count sheets only makes them softer in time. They are durable, too. Body oils cause pillow cases to show their age faster than the sheets do, so I would purchase an extra set of pillow cases and rotate them regularly. Once you sleep in a bed with high thread count sheets, you will be spoiled for life.

Silk charmeuse is probably the smoothest overall but they are extremely expensive and dry clean only.
